Sleep. Such a simple word to type yet sometimes so difficult to achieve in a world full of distractions. This is a topic we’re asked a lot about here at MountVerdi, especially as some of our best sellers are products to help with our insomnia sufferers like Dr.Ed’s Calm Oil and Drop CBD’s Night Oil.
It’s a topic we’re very passionate about, so first, as always, we must try and understand the root cause before assessing whether CBD can help you or not.
During lockdown, most of us have realised just how much of a toll the modern, fast paced lifestyle has taken. Many things have caused us to sleep badly. Some of the most common causes of insomnia according to The Mayo Clinic are things like:
● Stress. Managing a work / life / family balance is hard enough to achieve in 16 hours, let alone factoring time to wind down and prepare your mind and body for a crucial 8 hour recharge. Sometimes we get so accustomed to sleeping on 5-6 hours that we don’t realise just how much clarity we are truly missing from skipping a few hours regularly. It all adds up!
● Travel or work schedule. Your circadian rhythms act as an internal clock, guiding such things as your sleep-wake cycle, metabolism and body temperature. Disrupting your body's circadian rhythms can lead to insomnia. ● Poor sleep habits. Poor sleep habits include an irregular bedtime schedule, stimulating activities before bed, using your bed for work, eating or watching TV. Computers, TVs, video games, smartphones or other screens just before bed can interfere with your sleep cycle in a major way.
● Eating too much late in the evening. Having a light snack before bedtime is OK, but eating too much may cause you to feel physically uncomfortable while lying down. Many people also experience heartburn, a backflow of acid and food from the stomach into the esophagus after eating, which may keep you awake.
● Caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. Coffee, tea, cola and other caffeinated drinks are stimulants. Drinking them in the late afternoon or evening can keep you from falling asleep at night. Nicotine in tobacco products is another stimulant that can interfere with sleep. Alcohol may help you fall asleep, but it prevents deeper stages of sleep and often causes awakening in the middle of the night.
And a whole host of other potential causes to consider like post-traumatic stress, mental health, medications, chronic pain and environmental factors such as loud noises or an uncomfortable bed. If you don’t change your mattress every 7-10 years this may well be the root of your pain
So what does the research say about the relationship between CBD + sleep?
While research for CBD and sleep is still in the early stages, so far the most crucial way CBD has been proven to impact sleep is the way it works with the body to try and regulate it through homeostasis and the ECS.

If animals, plants and humans are not able to self regulate and resist change, it can cause a lot of problems for our bodies to support a healthy ECS. Critical functions like sleep, appetite, stress and pain are majorly regulated by ECS so if we can’t self regulate these functions, we are in trouble.
CBD works positively with our bodies by stimulating the activity of the ECS. Experts believe CBD prevents endocannabinoids from being broken down which then creates a more active ECS, which in turn is more stimulated in self regulating a critical function like sleep.
There are also recent studies that indicate CBD can help treat anxiety and pain very well, as well as grogginess and excessive daytime sleeping. Other research tells us that CBD has improved the symptoms of REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), a disorder in which a person acts out their dreams. RBD is associated with poor sleep and nightmares.
