      What’s the difference between Broad-Spectrum CBD, Full-Spectrum CBD and CBD Isolate?

      If you’ve spent some time researching CBD and trying to find the best product for your needs, there’s a good chance that you’ve come across some confusing terminology. Three terms that we’ve found our clients ask us about are broad-spectrum, full-spectrum and CBD isolate. Clients want to know what they are, what the difference is between the three and which is the best fit for their needs. We understand the confusion! Despite the fact that they sound quite similar, they are far from the same.

      Before we get into the differences, it’s important to have an understanding of THC and the ‘entourage effect’:

      What is THC?

      THC is a cannabinoid found in high concentrations in marijuana (sometimes upwards of 95%), and very low concentrations in industrial hemp (less than 0.2%). THC binds with CBD 1 receptors in the brain to produce psychoactive effects in the form of a high or a sense of euphoria. Keep in mind that CBD sold in the UK is produced from industrial hemp which has very low levels of THC which is why CBD does not have any psychoactive effects.

      What is the entourage effect?

      When you use CBD your body takes in hundreds of botanical compounds, each with their own unique effects and benefits. Their behaviour may also change based on its interactions with other compounds and this is known as the ‘entourage effect’.

      A practical example of this is how CBD and THC interact. One study looked at patients with cancer pain who were given either THC and CBD in a near 50:50 ratio, or a pure THC extract. The findings showed that the THC and CBD combination was more effective in relieving pain. There are also other compounds to consider, such as important cannabinoids including CBN, CBG and CBC, as well as terpenes, flavonoids and more.


      With a clear understanding of THC and the entourage effect, we can now look at the different types of CBD and who they are best suited to as the right choice varies from person to person:


      Full-Spectrum CBD

      Full-spectrum CBD is made from industrial hemp extract and contains the full spectrum of compounds found in the plant. These naturally occurring compounds include terpenes, flavonoids, essential oils and other cannabinoids. These compounds work together in synergy to magnify the benefits of each individual compound (called the entourage effect).

      For most people, full-spectrum CBD is ideal as studies show it to be more effective than other options (such as CBD isolate), and offer higher levels of pain relief, particularly at higher dosages.

      What makes full-spectrum CBD different to isolate and broad-spectrum is that it contains very low levels of THC (in the UK it’s below 0.2%), while broad-spectrum and isolate contain none at all.


      CBD Isolate

      CBD isolate is considered the purest form of CBD. It’s produced by isolating the cannabinoid CBD from all the other compounds. This means that all the other potentially beneficial compounds such as flavonoids, terpenes and other cannabinoids are also removed.


      Broad-Spectrum CBD

      Broad spectrum CBD is somewhere between CBD Isolate and full-spectrum CBD because, while it does contain the other compounds found in full-spectrum CBD, like CBD Isolate there is no THC at all. This is ideal for many users because it is still possible to enjoy the ‘entourage effect’, but the risk of any psychoactive effects from the THC is completely removed.


      Which type should I be using?

      With a broad understanding of the different types of CBD, you can start to think about which type is you should choose. There’s no one type that is better, everyone has different needs and those needs determine which type of CBD you should try. Understanding the pros and cons of each, and knowing which type is best suited to which situation can help you narrow down your choices.


      Full-Spectrum CBD

      CBD extract from industrial hemp along with all the other compounds offers the full benefits of hemp and users can experience the entourage effect. It’s also a more natural, less demanding extraction process .

      This is ideal for people who are looking for a specific THC to CBD ratio and those who have tried CBD isolate and broad-spectrum CBD but have not received relief for their symptoms.


      CBD Isolate

      This pure form of CBD (with all other compounds completely removed) offers no risk of psychoactive effects at all (and you won’t test positive for THC). It is tasteless and odourless, and is generally considered to be safe. On the downside, users won’t enjoy the enhanced synergistic benefits of the entourage effect.

      CBD Isolate is therefore an ideal choice for individuals who regularly undergo random drug testing (such as sports professionals), and those who struggle with the somewhat earthy taste of CBD. If you have sensitivity to THC or any other cannabinoids, were recommended to consume CBD in high doses or are a first-time user and hesitant about trying CBD, then isolate might be the ideal solution.

      Broad-Spectrum CBD

      Broad-spectrum CBD is different to full-spectrum only in that it does not contain THC. It therefore offers the ‘entourage effect’, and there is no risk of any psychoactive effects as the extract contains no THC. Two things to keep in mind with broad-spectrum CBD is that there is less research available about the effects, and the strong natural flavours may be off-putting to some.

      It’s an ideal option for those who have tried CBD isolate but have not had resolution for their symptoms, for people who have a known THC -sensitivity, for cautious first-time users, and for those who undo regular drug screening and are concerned about testing positive for THC.


      Research into the effectiveness of the different types of CBD on the spectrum is ongoing and there are no definitive answers as yet, so it may take some time and experimentation on your part to determine the best choice for your specific needs. If you have been using CBD for a while and are looking for ways to make your dosing more effective, you may wish to use full-spectrum CBD. If you’re just starting out, or undergo regular drug testing you may choose to try broad-spectrum CBD to start. With both these options you get the benefits of the CBD as well as the ‘entourage effect’. If you need to take other factors into consideration, such as a sensitivity to other cannabinoids (or if you really don’t enjoy the taste of CBD), then CBD isolate may work for you.

      There’s a lot of confusion about hemp oil and CBD and, no, they’re definitely not the same thing. But why is there any confusion at all? Surely it’s pretty obvious which product is which?

      The confusion stems from the definition of ‘hemp oil’ which is often used to describe the product extracted from the flowers and leaves of the hemp plant. This product is CBD-rich and is more commonly known as CBD oil. But, here’s the rub, the term ‘hemp oil’ is also often used interchangeably with hemp seed oil, which contains no CBD at all.

      We’re here to set the record straight by answering some of the questions that we get asked most often:


      What is hemp seed oil?

      Hemp seed oil, like many other carrier oils such as sunflower seed oil and jojoba oil is extracted via cold pressing from hemp seeds. It’s packed full of antioxidants and fatty acids, but contains no CBD (or any other cannabinoids for that matter). You’ll find it at your local health food store and, because it’s considered a superfood, it’s often used in food and drinks (such as smoothies). It’s powerful moisturising and skin softening properties (without clogging pores or contributing to oily skin) means that it’s also a popular skincare ingredient.

      Hemp oil benefits include:

      • Nutrition, in addition to being an excellent source of protein, hemp seeds are rich in antioxidants, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals.
      • Skin conditions, hemp oil can help with the dryness and itching associated with eczema
      • Female health, hemp oil is linked to decreasing menopause-related inflammation and reducing symptoms of PMS.


      What is CBD oil?

      Cannabidiol oil is derived from the leaves, flowers and stalks of industrial hemp. CBD is one of over 100 cannabinoids that are only found in the cannabis plant. CBD has anti-inflammatory properties and acts as an analgesic to reduce pain and inflammation and, when ingested, promotes a sense of calms and well-being.

      Why is there so much confusion?

      As the relative new kid on the block, CBD continues to grow in popularity and many brands are jumping on the bandwagon and are selling cannabis-infused products with confusing terminology (sometimes intentionally, sometimes not).

      CBD and hemp seed oil are both derived from the same plant and so its possibly understandable that they’re marketed as the same thing. But it’s much more likely that the reason brands are doing it is because CBD is a lot more expensive than hemp seed oil. For a brand that’s already producing a food or beauty product, it’s easy to add hemp seed oil to the ingredient list, rebrand the product with cannabis leaves on the label, include the word ‘cannabis’ a few times on the product description and many customers will think they’re purchasing a CBD product when, in fact, it contains no CBD at all.

      It goes the other way too. Many online advertising platforms, such as Google Ads and Facebook Ads, and e-retailers such as Amazon don’t allow companies to market CBD products (it’s against their terms of service). CBD brands can get around this by marketing their products as hemp oil which isn’t strictly accurate, and muddies the waters further.

      While it’s true that they’re both wellness products and neither are going to be harmful if purchased and consumed accidentally, you’re not going to get the benefits of CBD if you’re consuming hemp seed oil. 


      How do you check that you’re buying the right one?

      In an industry that has little in the way of regulatory oversight, some brands are making the most of the cannabis trend and are making false claims, and are attempting to intentionally deceive potential customers.

      To make sure that you don’t fall for misleading marketing, you need to:

      • Check the product label, if you’re looking for CBD, the product should clearly refer to CBD on the label, it may also be referred to as cannabidiol, hemp CBD, phytocannabinoid-rich hemp oil, full spectrum hemp, hemp oil or PCR hemp extracts. In contrast, hemp seed oil may be sold as cannabis sativa (hemp) seed oil, hemp oil or virgin hemp oil.

      The best way to ensure that you don’t get caught overpaying for hemp oil when you were looking for CBD oil is to do your homework before you buy, and to ensure that you always purchase from a reputable CBD seller.

       CBD is growing in popularity as a natural pain-relieving alternative to medication, particularly for managing joint and nerve pain.

      In the UK alone, more than 10 million people have arthritis or other conditions that affect the joints and peripheral neuropathy, while nerve damage affects at least 10% of people over the age of 55 in the UK.

      Both conditions can have a devastating impact on your health and your quality of life, and can be difficult to treat with medication. So, how does CBD help in relieving the symptoms of these conditions? And, how long does it take to work?

      CBD oil for joint pain

      Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent form of arthritis, although there are more than 100 different known types. Symptoms of arthritis are swollen, stiff or red joints that are warm to the touch. The condition is often characterised by chronic pain which impacts the individual's ability to go about their daily life.

      Many people who suffer from joint pain are turning to CBD, a cannabinoid that interacts with cannabinoid receptors in the body, as it alters the perception of pain, as well as working to reduce inflammation. Research shows that in addition to impacting the way we process pain, other areas such as mood, sleep quality and immune system function are affected by CBD – all of which provide welcome relief for arthritis patients. CBD has been linked to a reduction in inflammation and pain, with one study concluding that “topical CBD application has therapeutic potential for relief of arthritis pain-related behaviours and inflammation without evident side-effects.”

      CBD oil for nerve pain

One source of nerve damage is peripheral neuropathy, which develops when nerves in the body’s extremities are damaged. Nerve damage, in addition to reducing the sense of touch, often increases pain sensation in response to stimuli that would not normally be painful as well as impacting your ability to control the pain, making pain management more difficult.

      To treat nerve damage effectively, it is important to identify the cause in order to manage the underlying condition effectively. But even in cases where the root of the issue is known, many choose to use alternative or complementary therapies to reduce nerve pain. CBD is one of the most popular natural alternatives as it works by interacting with your endocannabinoid system, which plays an important role in regulating the body and maintaining homeostasis. It supports the proper functioning of your immune system and creates an anti-inflammatory response through its interaction with CB1 and CB2 receptors.

      CBD’s interaction with the receptors stimulates positive responses within your peripheral and central nervous system, thereby offering pain relief. Research shows that CBD products can help with nerve pain, specifically “difficult to treat pain. A perfect example of this is the cannabis-derived nasal spray Sativex that relieves central neuropathic pain in people with multiple sclerosis. In addition, research is being conducted into its ability to help treat cancer pain.

      One of the main reasons that CBD may be a good option for managing neuropathic pain is that it reduces reliance on other pain medication, specifically opioids (which can be addictive and lead to overdose), and over-the-counter pain medication. Anti-inflammatories, in particular, can have harmful side effects if used long-term, increasing the risk of peptic ulcer disease, myocardial infarction and acute renal failure. NSAIDs may also exacerbate chronic diseases and interact with prescription medications. Because CBD is natural and safe to use, it means that you can avoid these potentially dangerous issues.

      How should you take CBD?

      For the best pain-relieving effects, CBD oil should be taken sublingually as a tincture. This method offers among the highest levels of bioavailability (how well your body is able to absorb and use the CBD) as the CBD is not broken down or metabolised by the digestive system. It enters the bloodstream faster, and you will typically feel the effects within half an hour.

      How long does CBD take to work for nerve and joint pain?

      Many arthritis patients and those with nerve pain are concerned about finding the right CBD dosage. This is quite often because they associated CBD with marijuana and worry about “getting high”. The good news is that no amount of CBD will make you high because the levels of THC are restricted to under 0.2% according to the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, and CBD oil is therefore not psychoactive. Marijuana (or medical cannabis), in comparison, can have up to 35% THC.

      While CBD oil taken sublingually takes around 15 to 30 minutes to work, you might not experience the results you are looking for immediately. You may need to experiment to find the correct dosage, starting with a low dose and slowly increasing until you experience relief for your arthritis-related and nerve-related pain. This process can take a month or two as you try different dosages.

      The right dosage will vary from person to person, so the guidelines generally suggest starting from a low dose (somewhere between 5 and 10 mg) and gradually working your way up over a few weeks. In most cases, people will experience pain relief at a level of between 20 and 35 mg of CBD per day. This dosage can be taken at once, or broken up into smaller doses throughout the day, depending on what works for you.

      You should be able to see improvements in your pain levels almost immediately, and more noticeable effects will become apparent after two weeks. Depending on the individual, you may need a higher dose, so don’t give up if you don’t experience the benefits immediately.

      How do you make sure that you get the best results?

      If you don’t select the right brand of CBD oil, you could be waiting forever for it to relieve your pain. There are many counterfeit and poor-quality CBD products on the market that don’t contain the advertised level of CBD and may even be harmful.

      To ensure that you are using a product that will give you results, ensure that:

      • There are third-party lab reports available
      • It is full-spectrum, so you also experience the entourage effect
      • It has been produced by a reputable brand with a strong track record
      • The CBD concentration contained in the bottle is as advertised
      • The production process is transparent and carefully managed
      • The CBD has been extracted from organically grown hemp
      • It is free from harmful chemicals and other dangerous compounds

      One of the questions we get asked most often is “Can you overdose on CBD?” It’s not surprising that this question keeps coming up because CBD is still often (and erroneously) associated with marijuana. Yes, CBD is extracted from hemp, yes, it’s safe, no, it can’t make you high – but that’s a topic for another day.


      Before we start digging into the research, let’s take a moment and put your fears to rest: you can’t overdose from CBD. CBD is known to have very few side effects and is considered non-toxic and the WHO’s report concluded that CBD is well-tolerated in humans, even at a dose of 1500 mg per day. Their findings are supported by a number of associations and research bodies, with the National Cancer Institute finding that: “Cannabinoid receptors aren’t found in the brain stem, there is no way it can change our key functions like breathing. Drugs like opioids, on the other hand, are located in the brainstem — which means it has the potential to interrupt things like blood circulation and breathing that can result in serious injury or death.”


      How much CBD is dangerous?

      As the popularity of CBD continues to grow, and people use the cannabinoid to treat conditions from nerve and joint pain to anxiety and insomnia, it helps to have a good idea of how much CBD to take, and how much is too much.

      There are few studies that have looked at CBD and overdose levels, concluding that a person would need to ingest over 20,000mg of CBD within a very short space of time. If you consider that the strongest CBD on the shelves is only at around 5000mg (most are much less), you’d need to drink four bottles one after the other before things would start getting problematic. But since the highest dose you are likely to take is a dropper full of CBD oil, or a handful of gummies, you’re very unlikely to even get close to taking an overdose.


      Is CBD oil addictive?

      Along with concerns about overdosing, there is also the valid worry that CBD might be addictive. With research showing the addictive nature of other pain-relieving treatments (such as opioids), and CBD’s link to marijuana, many people want to know whether it is possible to get addicted to CBD.

      CBD doesn’t have any mind-altering effects because the psychoactive compound THC is present in levels below 0.2% (but even THC isn’t considered addictive.) In addition to having no psychoactive effects, CBD is also non-addictive. In fact, it’s being trialled as a recovery aid for drug addictions, including opiates and heroin.


      Can you build up a tolerance to CBD oil?

      One of the most problematic side effects of many types of medication is that you can build up a tolerance so, over time, they become less and less effective. This means that you then need to take higher doses to have the same effect, which will amply any negative side effects that they have. CBD is different in that studies show you don’t build up a tolerance, and many people take CBD for years without altering their dose (and in some cases, they are even able to reduce the dose). Known as reverse tolerance, many users decrease their dose over time and experience the same or better relief for their symptoms. As one researcher commented in a review of CBD studies: “In the past five years, an increasing number of publications have focused on the discovery of the anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and neuroprotective effects of CBD…The cerebroprotective action of CBD is CB₁ receptor-independent, long-lasting, and has potent anti-oxidant activity. Importantly, CBD use does not lead to tolerance.”


      This happens because CBD interacts with cannabinoid receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system, without binding to them, which has the effect of stimulating your body’s natural ability to produce endocannabinoids. Higher levels of endocannabinoids in your system mean that you need less CBD to get symptom relief.


      Does CBD have side effects?

      While CBD won’t give you a high or lead to an overdose, if you take too much, you may experience some minor side effects such as a dry mouth, drowsiness, lower blood pressure, a change in your appetite and diarrhoea.


      What about interactions with other medication?

      Similar to eating grapefruit while on medication, CBD interacts with an enzyme called Cytochrome P450 that breaks down the active ingredients found in prescription and non-prescription medication. If you are taking any of the following medications, talk to your doctor about possible interactions:

      • Antihistamines
      • Antibiotics
      • Anaesthetics
      • Angiotension II Blockers
      • Antipsychotics
      • Antiarrhythmics
      • Anticonvulsants
      • Antidepressants
      • Benzodiazepines
      • Beta-blockers
      • Calcium channel blockers
      • HIV antivirals
      • HMG CoA reductase inhibitors
      • Immunomodulators
      • Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
      • Oral Hypoglycemic Agents
      • Proton-Pump Inhibitors
      • Steroids and corticosteroids
      • Sulfonylureas


      What is the best way to safely consume CBD?

      The quality of your CBD oil will have an impact on its safety and while you might not be able to overdose, poor quality oil can have a negative impact on your health. Recently, there have been a few studies and reports that analysed the contents of CBD oil from leading brands, and the results were concerning. Penn State University’s study found that almost 70% of the CBD extract products they tested were mislabelled, while forensic toxicologists from Virginia Commonwealth University found harmful compounds in the extracts that they tested. These two studies were supported by a Californian company research which identified very high levels of dangerous compounds and misleading labels on the CBD products that they tested.


      The product you choose should offer:

      • Traceability, the CBD should be made from organic non-GMO industrial hemp, free from pesticides, herbicides and other harmful chemicals.
      • Safe extraction, CO2 extraction offers a safe, effective extraction process that doesn’t require additional heat or solvents
      • Third-party lab testing and reports, the labs analyse each batch of CBD, checking for unwanted or dangerous additives.


      With no cases of fatal CBD overdoses to-date, it seems clear that CBD is safe and effective. The two major considerations to keep in mind, therefore, are the quality of the CBD as it may contain dangerous compounds, and possible interactions with other drugs, which makes it important to consult with your doctor if you are on any medication.
